Author Bio: Dr. Sanusi Umar MD is the author of this article.
Fans of the popular plastic surgery reality show Botched on E! are probably more than familiar with the types of cases Dr. Nassif and Dr. Dubrow usually take on. Celebrity plastic surgery enthusiast Pixee Fox of “human Barbie doll” fame will soon be taking the stage. Among the other procedures she opened up about in a recent promotional video, one that she mentioned specifically was a permanent eyelashes surgery she had done.
Where did the extra hair come from for the eyelash hair transplant? Her pubic area. As a cosmetic surgeon hugely in favor of Body Hair Transplants (BHT) for the purpose of eyelash restoration, Dr. U cannot recommend the procedure to his own patients enthusiastically enough.
Why Use Pubic Hair for an Eyelash Transplant? Why Use Body Hair at All?
We know, it may sound strange, but there’s no reason to be squeamish. Pubic hair is just like any other hair on the body. Where it differs, however, is in the ideal curl it is able to contribute to any BHT eyelash restoration via Follicular Unit Excision (FUE).
Compared to body hair, head hair is not a good fit for eyelash restoration. It lacks the curl that makes an eyelash transplant convincing and natural-looking. Hair harvested from the body over the course of a BHT procedure tends to grow more slowly, often reaching a maximum length. This means that the patient will not need to trim the follicles as often after the fact. Body hair also tends to be much more malleable, meaning that when the patient curls it into place, it would stay in place without requiring perming to freeze it into position. Dr. Umar was the first to discover and document this finding in a study comparing nape (head) hair to eyelash transplants with leg hair to eyelash implants.
BHT Eyelash Implants with the Dr. U Hair Clinic
When it comes to BHT hair FUE for eyelash replacement surgery, Dr. U is the leading practitioner in world.
In this study by Dr. U, he compared the results of two permanent eyelashes surgery recipients. One patient’s eyelash implants made use of donor grafts sourced from the nape area. The other? Donor grafts from a leg hair transplant.
While both were left with results that satisfied them, Dr. U did note several key differences in outcome.
- In patient 1, the eyelashes with the transplanted leg hair never exceeded 1.5 cm, even when left untrimmed, reflecting the patient’s maximum leg hair length. As a result, the eyelashes did not require any trimming for the first 4 months after surgery and required trimming every 5–6 weeks thereafter. In contrast, the eyelashes with transplanted nape hair (patient 2) grew much longer, required trimming within the first 2 months and every 2–3 weeks thereafter.
- In the leg hair to eyelash transplant patient, self-curled hair did not loose it curl and did not require perming in a salon to maintain the curled shape. Whereas, the nape/head hair to eyelash patient could not maintain a curl without having it permed at a salon.
During the initial consultation, Dr. U will evaluate the patient head-to-toe in order to determine the most suitable donor area for their needs and desired outcome. This scouting phase is crucial, as it allows the doctor to choose exactly the right donor area for a successful body hair FUE procedure.
Other Ways that Pubic Hair Transplant Surgery Can Aid in BHT for Hair Loss
Body hair FUE surgery has many applications beyond eyelash replacement surgery. Body hair can be used to reconstitute the beard, mustache, chest hair etc, In this example, Dr. U used leg hair to reconstruct the facial hair of this patient:
While a pubic hair to eyelash transplant is one notably appropriate use of the technique, pubic hair transplant surgery is also quite conducive for pubic hair to beard transplant surgery, pubic hair to eyebrow transplant surgery, pubic hair to mustache transplant surgery, and pubic hair to sideburn transplant surgery as well as pubic hair to eyebrow transplant. In this patient Dr. U used pubic hair to repair and reconstruct the eyebrows to great ends:
With Dr.UGraft™, your practitioner is completely unhindered in terms of possible areas from which to harvest donor grafts. This opens up the door to results that were hitherto impossible for some patients with very textured hair.
The Dr.UGraft™ Advantage Makes BHT Eyelash Restoration an Option for Everybody
The Dr.UGraft™ FUE system makes what was once impossible a viable means of eyelash restoration for the first time. Its unique design is optimized for BHT of all types, including a pubic hair eyelash transplant.
What makes conventional FUE technology incapable of BHT eyelash restoration? Ordinary FUE punches are uniformly straight throughout. This makes them unable to effectively navigate the unpredictable curl of body hair and Afro-textured hair.
The Dr.UPunch i™ is the only FUE punch on the market with an intelligently-flared distal tip. This feature, along with a uniquely-textured lip, gently grips, scores, and pulls the graft into the lumen. Now, any practitioner using the system can harvest grafts of any texture from anywhere on the body. This makes eyelash restoration via BHT available to patients of all types, including those with kinky, Afro-textured hair.
Frequently Asked Questions on Eyelash Restoration and BHT with The Dr.UGraft™ System
Why not just use hair from the head or nape area for an eyelash restoration?
Hair from the head grows long and straight. Using head or nape hair often leaves the patient with eyelashes that require frequent maintenance and lack natural-looking appeal. Body hair tends not to grow as long and usually embodies at least some eyelash-like texture. Body hair won’t need to be trimmed as often and will generally hold a styled curl for longer without falling limp.
Is pubic hair really the best choice for a BHT eyelash restoration?
As strange as it sounds, for some patients, yes, it is. Pubic hair is curly and plentiful. It requires much less maintenance in order to adequately emulate the look of natural eyelashes. Some patients may find that they don’t have to curl it at all.
How can I get a BHT eyelash restoration like Pixee Fox?
A BHT eyelash restoration with the Dr.UGraft™ suite of FUE tools will be able to give you full, youthful-looking eyelashes. A BHT with Dr. U’s revolutionary system is safe, non-invasive, and relatively pain-free. Pubic hair is an ideal source of donor hair for an eyelash transplant, but Dr. U is able to utilize the body hair of the patient’s choosing.
