The beauty secret they don't want you to know: As it's estimated that 97 percent of female celebrities wear hair extensions, FEMAIL details who has lengthened her locks this week
- In a new interview, celebrity hairstylists discuss how their clients don't like to admit to using hair extensions
- FEMAIL details the stars who wore extensions to the 2017 Met Gala on Monday night
In addition to avant-garde gowns, celebrities showed off major hair transformations on the Comme des Garçons-themed Met Gala red carpet Monday night.
To name a few: Chrissy Teigen more than doubled the length of her hair for the occasion seemingly overnight, Jennifer Lopez's lob grew from shoulder-grazing to rib-grazing and Megyn Kelly's choppy crop appeared to have morphed into a thick, Rapunzel-esque ponytail.
With so many stars employing extensions (no, they didn't wake up like that) in one night, it wasn't surprising to discover that according to a Hollywood Reporter interview with pro hairstylist Priscilla Valles, an estimated 97 percent of female celebrities regularly rely on faux hair pieces to lengthen and pump up their natural look.
Not so real: Jennifer Lopez, 47, stepped out with a curly long bob on April 27 (left) and then arrived at the Met Gala on May 1 with a long and voluminous look (right)
Bobs away: Chrissy Teigen, 31, wore beachy waves to both a charity event on April 25 (left) and to a Met Gala after party on May 1 (right), but at the latter, the look was a lot longer
Rapunzel, Rapunzel: Megyn Kelly, 46, was pictured with a choppy bob (left) just four days before hitting the Met Gala red carpet with a lengthy ponytail (right)
While it can be pretty obvious when celebrities use extensions - i.e. instances like those from the Met Gala mentioned above - many still don't want to admit it.
'When I started doing extensions 16 years ago, I was signing confidentiality agreements daily because no one wanted anyone to know they had them in,' Priscilla told Hollywoodreporter.com.
Even now, in an age where A-listers are opening up about their flaws, insecurities and beauty tricks on social media, the hairstylist says that half of her celebrity clients want to keep that information private.
Hairstylist Jennifer Johnson, who works on the television show Scream Queens, has had a similar experience in the industry. 'Now we talk about using them, but I still will not say any names of actresses who wear extensions all the time,' she said in the article.

Behind the scenes: Celebrity hairstylist Clayton Hawkins Instagrammed his set-up, which included extensions, before tending to Elizabeth Banks' hair for Monday's Met Gala

Show and tell: Zendaya (left), 20, and Khloe Kardashian (right), 32, are open about their use of extensions and wigs
Then there are the refreshing celebrities like Chrissy Teigen and Khloe Kardashian who aren't afraid to pull back the curtain on their use of extensions.
Chrissy, who wore extensions for the Met Gala, recently documented her attempt to remove faux strands to no avail on Snapchat, and Khloe has a video on her website in which she details how she organizes her impressive fake hair collection.
Hair chameleon Zendaya is open about it, too.
In a video on her YouTube channel earlier this year, the actress explained the differences between extensions, weaves and wigs and revealed her personal preferences. 'I wear [wigs] when I want a completely different look - if I want my hair color different, or just something more dramatic,' she said.
There's nothing to be embarrassed about, says hairstylist Jen Atkin who works with the Kardashian crew. In an Instagram post addressing extension shaming, she wrote, 'Do whatever makes YOU happy and let's all just be grateful we have the option!'
