Michael’s Acne Treatment Plan

Because Michael was balancing school and extracurricular activities, downtime was a major concern. Neurotoxins

Neurotoxins are chemical signals that can alter the strength and excitability of neural connections. They bind to specific receptors or the neuron and thus block or weaken incoming signals. 

Botox vs. Daxxify

Botox and Daxxify are neurotoxin treatments that aim to reduce wrinkles and fine lines; they both work at the neuromuscular junction by inhibiting the release of the neuromodulator called acetylcholine. Normally, the nerves transmit an activation message to the muscle by releasing acetylcholine into the space between the nerve and the muscle. Blocking the release of this chemical neuromodulator results in failed muscle activation, causing paralysis or weakness.

Similarities and Differences

As neurotoxins, both of these injectables are skeletal muscle relaxants. As such, the two are similar in many ways. 

Both injectables are prescription only and have a similar profile regarding drug interactions – both are reported to have 24 major drug interactions and 90 moderate drug interactions. Similarly, neither Botox nor Daxxify has alcohol or food interactions. The two injectables can cause complications in individuals with dysphagia, respiratory and neuromuscular disorders, and infections. 

Despite the broadly similar drug profiles, Botox and Daxxify have some crucial differences, too. These distinctive traits determine the correct neurotoxin for your purposes and how long the results will last. 

Daxxify has abobotulinumtoxinA (ABO) as a base, while Botox uses onabotulinumtoxinA (ONA). The two injectables also use different stabilizers for botulin. Botox uses albumin, while Daxxify uses a peptide instead. 

Daxxify is also not recommended for patients with cardiovascular diseases, while Botox is advised against if the patient has UTI. 

Side Effects and Complications 

Both drugs’ side effects can range from mild to critical. The more severe side effects generally involve the toxin botulinum spreading beyond the intended area. Depending on the migration area, extent, and the patient’s medical history, the spread can cause critical and fatal issues.

Botox, along with Dysport and Xeomin, is a botulinum toxin, type A injectable drug. As a neuromodulator, it prevents nerve cells from releasing an excitatory chemical called acetylcholine as a signal to the muscles. This keeps them in a relaxed state and also prevents them from forming wrinkles.

Is Botox Safe for Crows Feet & Other Wrinkles? 

For many people, the term toxin is a source of concern. Botulinum toxin itself does cause botulism, a life-threatening form of food poisoning. However, its effects will depend on the amount.

It is safe in lower concentrations (i.e., through the use of pharmaceutical injectables like Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin) when administered by skilled medical practitioners like Dr.U, who is board certified in dermatology.

Unwanted complications are more likely to occur with less experienced providers or if the injections are not prepared according to standards set forth by the FDA.

Botox for the brows now has a new name, Browtox (not confused with Brotox). This application is used to correct droopy brows, often caused by aging muscles in the forehead. While today’s millennials and younger generations strive towards flat and full brow shapes, many people will still do almost anything for high arches. Well-defined, arched brows (think along the lines of 90’s supermodel Linda Evangelista) help faces look more energetic and alert. When brow shaping with wax and tweezers does not work, a little Botox may help. Relaxing one set of eyebrow muscles causes the opposite set to contract and lift the tail ends. Plus, one added benefit that some Browtox patients notice after their procedures is that their treatment produces a smoother skin surface, helping their foundation apply more evenly instead of settling into creases.

Dr. Umar injected the orbicularis oculi and procerus muscles to treat crow’s feet lines, making sure to avoid placing the injections too low, which can lead to prominent eye bags.

It was important for the patient’s forehead to avoid using excessively high Botox dosages, which causes an unnaturally stiff and frozen result.

Dr. U determined the right amount to help her skin look smoother and firmer but natural-looking at the same time.

For the frown lines, Dr. Umar injected the corrugator supercilii and procerus muscles, careful not to pass the mid-point of the brow, which can lead to ptosis or droopiness of this region.

As the final touch, Dr.U applied Botox to relax the muscles at the ends of the patient’s brows. This activated an opposite set of muscles which pulled them upwards to produce a high, face-flattering arch.   According to Dr.U, it is possible to control the height of the eyebrows.

Precision is critical with Botox eyebrow lifts.  Injecting the wrong point, even by a few millimeters, can raise the arches too high. This produces the Mephisto effect, also known as Spock brows or the Devil’s brow.

Dr.U also ensures that the brows are symmetrical on both sides of the face.  Though this is an obvious consideration,  a rather common Botox mistake is when one brow is higher than the other, producing a persistently quizzical look.

What are the reasons for Botox mistakes and poor outcomes?

Bad Botox results are mostly due to the expertise level of the provider [1]. Nonphysicians and nonspecialists who aim to offer these procedures will often rely on template approaches available in weekend training courses. Also, they may resort to using general values instead of customized ones that specifically fit the patient’s needs.

Additionally, quantitative errors can be made in terms of calculations, calibrations, and dilution.

Using the wrong amounts of Botox can also lead to poor results. Too much of the injection will produce a lack of facial expression. Using too little will result in little to no improvement.

Excessive Botox can also create wrinkles in other parts of the face. One example is using high dosages to treat crow’s feet or glabellar lines, which can cause bunny lines to appear on the nose in some people.

Also, the placement of the injections needs to be extremely precise to avoid results like awkward eyebrows, droopiness, or ptosis of the eyelids (due to injecting a nerve), and facial droop on one side of the face can happen when Botox migrates to other areas.

How long does Botox last on the crow’s feet and other areas?

For most people, Botox tends to last 3-4 months, on average.

Should I treat crow’s feet lines with Botox or fillers?

It really depends on what you want to achieve. If you are mostly bothered by the appearance of mobile, dynamic wrinkles, Botox for crow’s feet around the eyes would be the best option. However, if your main concern is the static resting lines etched on your skin, these creases can be filled in quite effectively with a filler called Belotero, which has been specially designed to improve fine lines.
