Our patient Michael is no stranger to this. When he came into the Dr. U Skin and Hair Clinic, his face was covered in cystic acne. Michael’s Acne Treatment Plan

Because Michael was balancing school and extracurricular activities, downtime was a major concern. Fractional Laser Skin Resurfacing with Fraxel Laser – Before Photos:

The patient was concerned about brown spots on the face, enlarged pores, uneven skin tone, and rough skin texture. She sought out Dr. U at his Redondo Beach, California clinic for laser skin resurfacing. Dr. U recommended the use of the Fraxel Dual laser for treatment.

What is Fractional Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Laser skin resurfacing using Fraxel involves heated beams of light split into thousands of microscopic (hence the name “fractional”) columns that target specific areas within the skin. This is different from other laser technologies, which treat broad layers of skin at a continuous spread. The untreated skin around the targeted area forms the base for new skin and pigment.

There are two Fraxel Laser models which can be used for skin resurfacing:

• Fraxel Dual Laser
• Fraxel Repair Laser

Fractional Laser Skin Resurfacing Procedure Photos:

Dr. U used the Fraxel Dual laser to target the areas the Beverly Hills patient wanted to improve. Dr. U chose the Fraxel Dual not only because of its fractional epilation ability but also because it is safe for all skin types, including the patient’s ethnic skin tone.

The procedure was painless, but there was, of course, the option to use a mild sedative and a numbing cream if the patient chose.

The Fraxel Dual uses two wavelengths, the 1550 nm Erbium and the 1927 nm Thulium to target specific areas. Typically there is minimal downtime — some patients even schedule the procedure during their lunch break and return to work afterward. Mild flaking occurs up to three days after the procedure and usually clears up by day five.

In addition to skin resurfacing, the Fraxel Dual can be used for acne scar removal.

When will I see laser skin resurfacing results?

Most patients need 6 to 10 days for recovery. The patient will need to rest, recover, and avoid sun exposure. The skin will go through a redness, drying, and peeling process. The healing process is often likened to a bad sunburn, except the skin will become bronzed, dried, and cracked. This layer will soon shed to reveal a more beautiful, smooth, even, and the firm surface beneath.

What is fractional skin resurfacing, and how is it different from an ablative treatment?

Fractional laser skin resurfacing involves beams of light energy split into thousands of fractional columns to treat specific areas. Fractionation means only a fraction of the skin is treated interspersed between unaffected skin fractions, which then form the basis for new tissue regeneration and healing. Minimizing thermal injury by fractionation and complications of scarring and pigmentary abnormalities are minimized. On the other hand, ablative laser treatments work in a non-fractional fashion, subjecting the entire skin surface to thermal damage with no intervening unaffected skin from which fast healing and recovery can occur.

What laser skin resurfacing procedure is appropriate for my skin type?

Because of the ablative nature of the Fraxel Repair laser, it is only safe for patients with very fair skin (Fitzpatrick levels I-III). The heat energy of the Repair laser wholesale targetting of water in the dermal and epidermal cells results in more trauma which in people of color can lead to several side effects like scarring and hyperpigmentation.

The Fraxel Dual is safe for all skin types due to its use of the shorter 1550 nm and 1927 nm wavelengths, hence the “dual” nature of the laser.

Also known as the vascular laser, the Vbeam system has been designed as a highly specialized technology for treating skin conditions like Rosacea, Poikiloderma, and others which are caused by the abnormal proliferation or dilation of small surface blood vessels. As a pulsed dye laser, it administers short bursts of energy wavelengths (585-595nm) which are absorbed by the hemoglobin in red blood cells which serve as precise points of entry into the blood vessels.  Once this is achieved, the heat proceeds to destroy the walls. The non-functional tissue left behind is then broken down by the immune system and carried away.

What causes rosacea?

Rosacea is primarily caused by genetics. This is evident by a  high proportion of individuals with Rosacea within the population of fair-skinned individuals born of  European descent.  Most patients are able to report relatives in the family who share this condition. A genetic predisposition can give rise to abnormalities in vascular behavior that give rise to Rosacea symptoms.

As an example, affected individuals are susceptible to skin flushing and flare up episodes caused by environmental triggers such as weather conditions or specific foods.

Medical experts have also observed that Rosacea patients tend to have higher numbers of specific bacteria and mites which may be contributing to their symptoms.  Evidence shows that these individuals have larger quantities of H. pylori bacteria in their gut which cause the body to produce a polypeptide that stimulates blood vessel dilation, known as bradykinin.

For unknown reasons,  they also have higher populations of a mite known as Demodex folliculorum. It is not clear if this results from having Rosacea, or if the mites themselves are causing the symptoms.

Is there such a thing as a good rosacea treatment over the counter?

At the moment, there are no effective over the counter Rosacea treatments that cure or eliminate the redness.  Products sold to consumers without a prescription can only provide temporary relief for symptoms, at best. They can help soothe skin dryness, redness, irritation, and swelling. Ultimately, they cannot eradicate the core issue of problematic blood vessels or the symptoms arising from more advanced stages of the condition.

Why does the Vbeam laser work for rosacea and as a poikiloderma treatment?

The Vbeam laser is specifically designed to get rid of small, problematic blood vessels. This makes it an ideal choice for treating conditions like Rosacea and Poikiloderma. Both cases are characterized by unwanted skin discoloration caused by vascular dilation and/or proliferation. The Vbeam laser can precisely pinpoint and clear away these blood vessels, allowing patients to restore their normal skin coloration.

What are the side effects of Rosacea laser treatment?

Common side effects of a Rosacea laser treatment may include some swelling, bruising, itching, redness and soreness right after the procedure. However, these issues usually heal and resolve within just a few days.

What is the cost of Rosacea laser treatment? 

A Rosacea laser treatment may cost between $350-$600 per session. The number of sessions will depend on the extensiveness of each case. As with the example of the patient discussed above,  three sessions were needed. What is the recommended treatment for Rosacea bumps?

Rosacea bumps need to be addressed differently from skin flushing forms of the condition. The pimple-like manifestation of the condition can be treated with prescription medications such as topical Metrogel (metronidazole), anti-inflammatories sulfur-based creams, antibiotics (e.g. sulfacetamide, doxycycline)  and topical retinoids (e.g. Differin)

Laser Tattoo Removal Results: Before Photos
