Living With Severe Scalp Scarring Disorder: The Emotional and Spiritual Challenges

Dr. Umar stated that most individuals that see severe cases of a scalp scarring disorder like Acne Keloidalis Nuchae (AKN) will frequently inquire regarding how this could have developed in such an extreme form. Although Robert acknowledged that his case was quite aggressive, he also had to continue to live his normal life – working, keeping his insurance in order, and building some type of stability.

The pressure of a regular day-to-day routine for many patients, causes them to put off receiving treatment and allows the chronic scalp inflammation and scarring to worsen until they can find the proper professional help.

Robert mentions how he felt like everyone was always staring at him in public, especially when he was at the church. This has made him feel very conscious about his looks and started isolating himself.

The Subtle Strain AKN Places on Self-Confidence and Mental Well-Being

Robert explained how the effects of  his scalp scarring disorder went beyond his physical appearance, and took a toll on his self-confidence and overall mental health. He described how job interviews give him anxiety due to fear of being judged misunderstood by others based upon his condition.

This is common among those who suffer from severe chronic folliculitis of the nape cases, in which the psychological toll can weigh equally as much as the physical symptoms of the condition.

Job interviews are one of the things that brings anxiety to Robert. This is one of the main reasons why he chose a career of being a truck driver.

When Scalp Conditions Disrupt the Ability to Find Comfort through Faith & Spiritual Support

In addition to the workplace environment, Robert explained how his condition disrupted his ability to practice his spirituality. Places that should be safe havens from judgment and disapproval, were places of discomfort. He mentioned that he stopped going to church because of his scalp condition.

Dr. Umar emphasized that although many people seek the support of their faith during times of crisis, having a visual medical condition makes seeking support from even these communities seem impossible. With compassion and understanding, both the patient’s medical health, and their confidence and ability to belong will be restored.

Robert was once a spiritual man, but due to the staring eyes because of his scalp scarring disorder, and judgment he feels from other people when he’s at the church, he eventually lost his faith and stopped going to church.
