Over the 16 years of living with Folliculitis Decalvans, Anwar has tried multiple treatments in the hopes of ridding himself of the large scalp lesion. He tried conservative therapies like injectable medications and corticosteroids, which are usually known to help reduce inflammation. He’s also tried surgical intervention, but time and time again, the lesion comes back, and it comes back worse than before.

The Worsening Scalp Bump
Despite the previous medical interventions, the condition continued to advance. Each failed surgery left behind dense scar tissue, which made the scalp harder to evaluate and treat in the future. The scar tissue often blended into the keloid-like masses, creating large, irregular areas that were difficult to distinguish from one another. As a result, the scalp became a mix of inflamed tissue, growths, and scarring, with little sign of improvement.
One Last Shot
Anwar’s surgery with Dr. Umar was his last attempt to finally be rid of his Folliculitis Decalvans scalp lesions. He came to the clinic with his father, Aldwyn, excited about the prospect that this could be his first successful chance at getting rid of the scalp bumps. “The goal is to get a procedure that has a lasting impact,” Anwar told his dad right before surgery. “If I end up with just a flat part of my skin, that will be just fine for me.”
