The Physical Limitations of Severe Cicatricial Folliculitis in Daily Life

Once the Cicatricial Folliculitis reached Robert’s sideburns and scalp, every day was now an unpleasant experience. This was due to the discomfort associated with inflammation from the sideburns to the scalp, and the large lesions growing around his head.

According to Dr. Sanusi Umar, the sheer size of these growths and where they are located physically obstructed something as simple as wearing eyeglasses (prescription lenses, sunglasses etc.) creating a significant limitation for Robert.

When his scalp disorder started to worsen, Robert could no longer wear any type of glasses, whether prescriptions or sunglasses.

Finding Ways to Manage the Discomfort Associated with Advanced Scalp Disease

In order to adapt to the constant pain and appearance of his condition, Robert had to alter many aspects of his life. For instance, instead of wearing glasses, Robert began to wear hats and bandanas to cover up his head.

He also found it necessary to adjust his sleeping habits because of the lesions on the back of his head. As a result of this lesion development, Robert is currently unable to sleep in his preferred position (back), and has been forced to sleep on his stomach, which he has done for some time, and is still doing so today – even after this successful surgery with the Bumpinator.

Beanies and bandanas have been Robert’s staples in hiding his scalp disorder from the public eyes.

The Reality of Traveling with Advanced AKN: Hygiene, Sleep, and Social Isolation

While traveling as a long-haul trucker for nearly a decade, Robert lived in hotels for most of those years. Due to the drainage issues and the continued discomfort, Robert carried his own black pillow while traveling. In addition, he could never use the standard white hotel pillows.

This example demonstrates the realities of living with severe posterior scalp scarring disorder. These include managing hygiene, the interruption to ability to sleep, and social isolation. Once patients receive proper medical treatment for their advanced AKN, they will have an opportunity to regain the comforts and normality in their lives that were lost due to their disease.
