Dreaded bumps which manifest through a chronic skin condition known as Acne Keloidalis Nuchae (AKN) appear on the back of the head. They occur most often in ethnic males who are genetically predisposed to developing this condition. Since they resemble pimples, they are sometimes mistaken as acne or general razor bumps. Commonly thought to be keloidal in nature, they are treated as though they were keloid scars. However, these approaches do not make the bumps go away. On the other hand, patients can also choose to have AKN lesions surgically removed. But conventional excisional techniques are more likely to leave behind noticeable scarring and the risk of recurrence. There is an immense need for better forms of education and awareness on Acne Keloidalis Nuchae. For this reason, the Dr.U Hair and Skin Clinics in Los Angeles has decided to make this information available through an animated video series called Dr.Bumpinator.
Who Is Dr. Bumpinator?

Dr. Bumpinator In the Fight Against Acne Keloidalis Nuchae : The Dr.Bumpinator video series is intended to educate viewers about the progressive nature of Acne Keloidalis Nuchae and shed light on effective options for getting rid of AKN bumps. As a cartoon animation, viewers are more apt to remember the stories and concepts and respond to the information as useful and meaningful. And most importantly, they will be motivated to proactive and take constructive action.
How Dr. Bumpinator Puts an End to AKN Bumps Once and For All
Dr.Bumpinator’s mission is to help free his patients from AKN bumps, so that they can move forward confidently in life with a normal, natural looking appearance, not thinking twice about others noticing the back of their head.
He has developed his own unique approaches to in most cases terminate AKN permanenetly. Using innovative surgical, laser or radiation therapy to achieve the following two main objectives which are important for patients to be truly happy with their results.
- making sure that the bumps don’t return
- producing the most optimal esthetic finishing (better scar, etc)
Even with large-sized bumps which leave behind bigger wounds, Dr.Bumpinator is still able to produce the most optimum esthetic outcome. S how does he achieve this seemingly miraculous feat?

VIDEO #2 Dr. Bumpinator Innovate Surgical Techniques For Eliminating Medium Sized Acne Keloidalis Nuchae AKN Lesions
One of Dr. Bumpinator’s major take home messages is that different surgical techniques are needed to remove different types of Acne Keloidalis Nuchae bumps. For smaller and more narrow sized fused bumps in the top part of the nuchal area, he applies a technique that utilizes trichophytic excision as well as Bumpinature tension suture kit assisted closure. This causes the wounds to close seamlessly at the end of the procedure (1). This leaves behind a thin, linear scar. The patient’s own hair is able to grow through and camouflage it.

VIDEO # 3 : Dr. Bumpinator Invents Surgical Tools and Techniques For Eliminating Large Sized Acne Keloidalis Nuchae AKN Lesions
After surgical removal of large AKN( Acne Keloidalis Nuchae ); larger and wider wounds will need to close slowly over time, not right away. With Dr.Bumpinator’s bat-shaped excision method, wound closure is optimally aided by tension sutures using the BUMPINATOR SUTURE KITS to gradually pull the edges closer together and encourage new skin tissue production in the right direction (2). The end result is typically a clean straight line, forming a normal and natural looking border of the patient’s posterior (i.e. backside) hairline.

VIDEO #4: Dr. Bumpinator Innovate Laser Techniques For Eliminating Large Sized Acne Keloidalis Nuchae AKN Lesions
Dr. Bumpinator has developed new methods for permanently eliminating smaller AKN bumps in a more predictable and consistent manner that is esthetically using innovative laser treatments. Dr. Bumpinator has found that if they meet some qualification criteria, laser treatment will be a most optimal approach using special protocols that he developed and published(3).

How The Dr.Bumpinator Tension Suture Kit Closes Large Sized AKN Wounds To Form A Clean, Discrete Line
There are many individuals who have reached advanced and severe stages of AKN with a single massive sized bump in the lower nuchal area. In terms of reaching a normal looking appearance on the back of their head, it may seem like they have reached the point of no return. But in fact, there is still hope. Here’s what Dr. Bumpinator does.
First, he removes the AKN lesion through a one-of-a-kind-surgical technique that he developed himself, called the bat excision. As mentioned earlier, the shape promotes a horizontal straight lined scar which ends up being perfectly aligned with the patient’s own posterior (i.e. backside) hairline.
The bat-shaped wound ends up creating an opening that is quite large, due to the size of the AKN lesion. It will not close on its own without a little help.
Dr. Bumpinator employs the use of tension sutures. They work to slowly and gradually pull the edges of the wound together. Also they work to provide a directional action which promotes an organized and structured formation of new collagen tissue. Because traditional tension suture methods which utilize either bolster gauzes or conventional suture plates are fraught with problems of tissue tear which cancel the the tension to make the tension suturing ineffective and/or cause additional scarring from the healed torn tissue; Dr Bumpinator invented a patent pending plate (BUMPINATOR TENSION SUTURE KIT) that nearly eliminates the incidence of tissue tear! Using the bumpinator suture kit, the full benefit of tension suturing that directs wound closure direction for a faster and aesthetically optimal wound closure and
Dr.Bumpinator is led by a vision for helping patients regain a normal looking appearance on the back of their heads. And by creating surgical methods aimed in this direction, for the right candidates, he is able to help AKN sufferers in ways that were previously not possible.

Frequently Asked Questions – Dr. Bumpinator and Acne Keloidalis Nuchae
Is Acne Keloidalis Nuchae AKN a Keloid Condition?
Dr.Bumpinator Breaks A Major AKN Myth- Acne Keloidalis Nuchae Is Not a Keloidal Condition : Many patients with AKN end up feeling unsatisfied by their treatment outcomes. This is largely due to misconceptions in the medical community about the nature of Acne Keloidalis Nuchae lesions. Often regarded as a type of keloid condition, AKN is commonly addressed using steroid injections and antibiotics. This is an important area of awareness addressed within the Dr.Bumpinator video series.
- The purpose of using a corticosteroid injection is to help diminish the size of a hypertrophic keloid. Steroids work to break the bonds which keep collagen fibers together. They also have anti-inflammatory properties which may reduce redness itching and tenderness.
- The reason antibiotics are used is to kill the bacteria which may propagate in the discharge produced within AKN bumps.
Both drugs can alleviate symptoms. But they do not eliminate them. They continue to remain in place because AKN is not a keloidal condition. Actual keloid scars result when there is a cut or skin wound, causing the skin to overproduce collagen fibers.
Acne Keloidalis Nuchae is an entirely different condition that is completely unrelated to cuts or wounds. Dr.U believes that the skin overreacts to the in-growth of hair. This triggers and intensifies the production of collagen. However, breaking the bonds between collagen fibers will not get rid of the AKN bump as long as the cause of the problem (embedded hair follicle) remains.
IS Acne Keloidalis Nuchae The Same Thing As Razor Bumps ?
Acne Keloidalis Nuchae Is Not the Same As Regular Razor Bumps
Many young men find themselves dismayed by the appearance of multiple bumps on the back of their head after a close shave. Yet, in many cases, they tend to underestimate the severity of these growths, thinking they are basic razor bumps caused by mild inflammation of the hair follicles.
A key message of the Dr. Bumpinator series is that bumps which emerge after a close shave may be general forms of folliculitis, with nothing to be overly concerned about. But in some cases, they may be the result of Acne Keloidalis Nuchae. In the case of AKN, they will continue to get larger and eventually coalesce into a single large bump. So early intervention, before it gets to this point is crucial.

Besides taking action right away, Acne Keloidalis Nuchae sufferers must know what specific requirements will be needed to successfully and permanently remove their lesion. They must also consider the cosmetic outcome, in terms of how noticeable or aesthetically satisfactory the final scar.
What happens if more general forms of excision, aside from the techniques mentioned above are used to remove Acne Keloidalis Nuchae bumps?
When excisional methods are not properly matched with the size and location of the bumps, patients are more likely to experience recurrence of the AKN growths and scarring that appears to be highly noticeable and disfiguring on the back of the head.
Dr. Bumpinator’s specialized excisional and wound closure techniques eliminate the possibility of new bumps developing after the old lesions have been removed. They also ensure that the final scar is hardly noticeable.
To this end, Dr. Bumpinator shares his surgical secrets so that viewers understand how it is possible for him to achieve what seems to be impossible. Dr.Bumpinator is able to surgically remove different sized bumps, including very large ones, But in the end, his procedures somehow behind discrete, hardly noticeable scarring, with a normal and natural looking appearance on the back of the head, despite having removed large surface areas of skin.
When should surgery be considered over laser for removing AKN lesions?
Surgery would be a better choice than laser in cases where the individual papules exceed 2mm in vertical height. The Nd:YAG laser beam, which is used by Dr.Bumpinator, would need to reach the base of the follicle to destroy the hair production structures and mechanisms. This is only possible when the bumps are 2mm tall or smaller.
Is it possible for Acne Keloidalis Nuchae patients to benefit from a combination of different treatment modalities
Yes. the Dr. Bumpinator series emphasizes that some patients may experience the most optimal results possible, not just from surgery alone, but from a combination of different treatments following their Bat-excision procedure to improve their healing and the overall quality of their final outcome. These include laser, injectable steroids, topically applied steroids and topical retinoids.
