The outcome of a hair transplant can be amazing and life-changing. But it won’t manifest overnight. Therefore, patients are usually quite eager to find out how long it would take to see their results after a hair transplant. In the Q&A video below, Dr. Umar addresses the answer to this question.
When would i see the results of my hair transplant surgery?
Hair restoration patients are understandably eager to see their growth and results. In this video, Dr. U provides a basic timeline of different milestones th…
Hair Transplant Timeline – Helpful Information for Los Angeles Patients

The hair transplant timeline can differ for individual patients. On average, however, it is a useful point of reference for knowing what to expect ahead of time. This can prevent needless worry and anxiety. Having a general understanding of this timeline can also be helpful for planning out important events, like parties, gatherings, weddings, as well as photo and video shoots.
Stages of Hair Transplant Growth
Following a hair restoration procedure are various stages of hair transplant growth. Within a couple weeks after the actual surgery, patients will notice blood clots and scabbing in the transplanted area, along with areas with small short hairs.
Results After a Hair Transplant at 2 Weeks
At about the two-week point, the scabs start to fall off. The small transplanted hairs are still visible. However, they are actually undergoing their final life-cycle stage to prepare for brand new growth.
Hair Loss at 2 Months
By the two month point, all these hairs are shed. And the state of hair loss resembles what it was like before the surgery. Understandably, many patients feel alarmed when this happens. But, in fact, this is a very normal and natural occurrence.
Brand New Growth at 3-4 Months
Signs of new growth start to become more apparent by three and a half to four months. These areas tend to be patchy and not uniform. As Dr. Umar points out in the video, every individual hair follicle does its own thing, at its own time and pace. However, the patchiness will continue to improve over the weeks to come.
Also within the recipient area, many patients will notice areas of pinkness and bumps. As new hair is trying to emerge, they will encounter resistance from the skin. This will often lead to irritation and inflammation. Nonetheless, these signs still represent the good news that hair is starting to grow. In some cases, the pimple-like bumps may spread over wider areas. If they start to get out of control, Dr. Umar advises patients to speak to their doctor and have them treated.

More Uniform Results After a Hair Transplant at 6-7 Months
By six to seven months, patients will start to notice much greater uniformity in the growth on their recipient area. However, these hairs will still be quite short, compared to the surrounding original areas. Dr. Umar advises patients to wear shorter hairstyles during this time.
Hair Growth Stage at 10-12 Months
Around the ten to twelve month stage, the majority of growth starts to become more apparent. At this stage, patients can groom their hair and wear it longer if they wish.
Dr. U Discusses Hair Transplant Results After One Year
According to Dr. Umar, a patient’s complete growth potential can take up to eighteen months. It takes around ten months to a year to see desired growth. After one year, however, the hair continues to undergo changes to reach full maturity. Patients will notice new developments in terms of characteristics like shine and texture. Also, the newly transplanted hair will start to blend in much better with the rest of the hair.
Final Hair Transplant Results
Most patients can start to really enjoy their final hair transplant results by the eighteen-month point with the right density, texture, and length. They can finally start to free their minds of all their past preoccupations with surgery and move forward with their new head of hair.
