The surgeon, Dr. Sanusi Umar, stated that all went according to plan during the surgery, and that he felt confident in the approach taken by the surgical team. The surgeons were successful in maintaining their ability to stay in the appropriate planes of tissue, and successfully controlled bleeding. The primary goal of Dr. U’s team was to remove the diseased tissue from the pus bumps on the scalp, while creating a natural looking contour at the back of the scalp.
Removing the Source of Inflammation
One of the primary goals of the surgery was to completely remove all of the lesions from the area of the chronic folliculitis of the nape. By removing this tissue, it is possible to eliminate some of the inflammatory signals (also known as cytokines), which are responsible for the progression of pus filled bumps on the head.
Dr. Umar stated that by removing the inflammatory source, along with John’s continuing weight loss, he expects to see a slowing down, cessation, or improvement of the activity of both DC and cutis verticis gyrata CVG in the future.
Ongoing Post-Operative Management Plan
Dr. Umar also discussed how other non-surgical treatments will be utilized to help manage the dissecting cellulitis post-operatively. He emphasized that this will be an additional part of a multi-step process in managing John’s chronic scalp condition, which is well understood to be a long term problem.
While the surgery addressed the structural and advanced disease of the scalp, the medical treatment will continue to address the chronic nature of the disease to ensure optimal healing, maintenance of scalp health, and durability of the results achieved through the surgery.
