Robert states that even though he had completed college and obtained a degree, he had difficulties in looking for a job since his condition got worse. He stated when interviewing for jobs, he believed that the hiring managers did not judge him based on his looks alone but also based on what they believed about his overall health.
He thinks that the companies might be concerned over insurance coverage, job reliability and taking time off for doctor visits and treatments – thus rejecting him from the application. This is a very common concern that many AKN patients face; being viewed as a liability rather than a patient who can receive treatment for their medical condition.
Breaking the Cycle of Stigma and Fear
Dr. Umar also noted that many people ask themselves, how is it possible for such severe scalp conditions like AKN to progress without the aid of proper medical care or treatments? The majority of people do not understand how difficult it is for patients to find effective treatments for their chronic scalp diseases. Robert’s story illustrates the stigma associated with chronic scalp diseases which can prevent patients from reaching their full potential.
With proper medical treatment, education and support, patients with severe AKN will be able to overcome the obstacles that may be preventing them from achieving the self-confidence and future they deserve.
