Non-Surgical Treatment for Dark Circles and Eye Bags by Dr. U

The eyes are a focal point of the face and can be a beautiful feature that people want to show off. However, dark circles and eye bags can make people self-conscious. These issues can form due to the natural aging process, but they are generally caused by genetics. This patient of Dr. Umar was unhappy about her under eye shadows and her sunken lower eyelids. She wanted a long-term solution that didn’t involve surgery. Dr. Umar used the dermal filler Radiesse to neutralize the bags and to minimize the dark circles.

The patient was unhappy with her dark circles and eye bags so she sought out the help of Dr. U for a non-surgical treatment for her under-eye area. The patient said she tried almost every under-eye cream on the market and nothing worked. She said “I wouldn’t leave the house without concealer on,” because she didn’t like the area under her eyes.

Under eye shadows can be caused by unhealthy lifestyle choices, as well as genetics. Those with dark circles due to lack of sleep, dehydration, smoking, and other external factors can reduce their appearance by making lifestyle changes. However, for individuals with hereditary dark circles, this is not a solution.

Eye Bag Reduction Procedure Photos:

Dr. U used the dermal filler Radiesse to reduce the patient’s dark circles and eye bags. Dr. U chose to use Radiesse for the under-eye area because it won’t produce the Tyndall effect. The Tyndall effect is when light rays pass through, they bend and create a bluish color which is not ideal for the undereye area where the skin is very thin. Radiesse is made of tiny calcium-based particles and can be molded once injected, which helps decrease the puffiness associated with eye bags.

Radiesse provides immediate correction and continues to work by allowing the body to produce its own natural collagen. (Image found at http://www.radiesse.com/ ) *

The patient is very pleased with her results and how successful the procedure was. She said “I saw a significant difference, I don’t wear under-eye concealer anymore, I don’t need to. And I’ve been getting a lot of compliments.” The patient said she will be maintaining her under-eye area and will be back to see Dr. U.

Dr. Umar treated the patient's sunken lower eyelids and under eye shadows with Radiesse. Since Radiesse is white and opaque, there is no risk of bruise-like discolorations.

The calcium particles within Radiesse provide volume and support in the injected area, allowing under eye bags to be lifted toward the tear trough and reshaped to be in line with the face. This creates the appearance of an eye bag reduction.

Frequently Asked Questions – Dark Circles and Eye Bags

Are dermal filler injections the best way to treat dark circles and eye bags?

Injections are more effective than creams, cosmetic products, and metal roller balls. The results from an injection will look very natural and the procedure is easy. The results of injections may be more permanent (up to about 18 months) and long-lasting. The decision really depends on the patient’s goals.

Can eye bag reduction be achieved through cold eye masks and healthier lifestyle choices?

Eye masks and cold compresses can offer temporary improvement but it will not be permanent. Eye bags and dark circles may be a result of aging and the deterioration of soft tissue in the tear troughs. They may also be genetic or due to high salt intake and dehydration. Cutting down on salt and drinking more water would probably be better than many products on the market. If under-eye issues persist, you may want to see a dermatologist to discuss other solutions, such as non-surgical Radiesse treatments.

Can hyaluronic acid fillers like Juvederm or Restylane help with improving the appearance of the tear troughs?

Juvederm and Restylane are clear gel-like suspensions, this makes them more subject to the Tyndall Effect. The Tyndall effect is when light rays pass through, they bend and create a bluish color which is not ideal for the under-eye area where the skin is very thin. Radiesse is a better option for the under-eye area as the Tyndall Effect is not a concern.

Dark circles and eye bags are easily treated with fillers like Radiesse and other non-invasive, non-surgical means. For more information, you can ask any questions you may have through our Ask Dr. U form by clicking the button below:
