Anwar’s journey is not just another story of a complex medical condition – it’s also a story of resilience. Three surgeries were done to Anwar’s scalp to remove his Folliculitis Decalvans, but they were all just temporary relief. The lesions kept coming back, and Dr. Sanusi Umar’s goal is clear: to make sure that this is Anwar’s last surgery.
In the attempt to make this surgery a success, Dr. U carefully planned out his strategy to completely extract the disease from Anwar’s scalp. He mentioned, “That will entail navigating between where the scars of the previous surgery ends and the disease lesion begins. I needed to find the right tissue planes to do that.”
During the procedure, Dr. Umar removed every trace of the diseased tissue, including any other tissue that could potentially contribute to the recurrence of the lesions. Dr. U’s strategic technique is backed up by a study, which is the first surgical removal of Follicular Decalvans. The surgery was a success, and Anwar’s 16-year old lesion was finally extracted from his scalp.
Strength Beyond the Operating Room
Anwar’s father has been with him all throughout this journey to attempt to remove the lesions on his scalp for good. And now, there is hope that this is finally the last surgery that could change Anwar’s life.
For him, this condition has never been a hindrance for Anwar to accomplish his goals in life. He mentioned that for most people, this has a great effect on their daily lives, but Anwar moved through his life positively. “He is a champion.”, Anwar’s father said.
Moving Forward with Confidence
Anwar’s story reminds us that there is hope, even after numerous unsuccessful attempts to remove FD. His journey is proof that with the patient’s determination and the doctor’s skill, healing and long-term change is possible. This is a story not just of another FD removal, but it is a reminder that restoring confidence and improving the quality of a patient’s life is indeed possible.
