Since childhood, Robert has lived with scalp cysts, and therefore it has affected every aspect of his adulthood. As such, when compared to patients who developed this condition later in life and had time to form relationships and establish their careers prior to developing the condition, Robert’s AKN began to progress much earlier and prevented him from experiencing a “normal” life and social interactions.
Thus, we see how chronic inflammatory scalp diseases can negatively affect a patient’s emotional growth and quality of life from a very young age.
The Psychological Toll Of Advanced Scalp Disease
The emotional effects of severe AKN are perhaps best captured by one of Robert’s most poignant statements about the emotional effects of his condition. While outwardly Robert presents himself as confident and determined, he has battled with feelings of low self-confidence for many years.
In many cases, the emotional burden associated with the psychological effects of advanced scalp disease can cause patients to become isolated, to doubt themselves and to feel as though they are missing out on so much of life, including marriage and raising children.

Robert’s sister remembers Robert as an outgoing and happy boy prior to the onset of his AKN. Now that Robert’s treatment for his hairline bumps is completed, he is actively rebuilding that joy and identity.
