For Mia, Disneyland was more than a destination. She loved everything connected to Disney and wanted to enjoy the same princess experience she saw other children having. But during one family visit, her alopecia totalis became the reason she could not take part in a moment she had been excited to experience.
A Disney Experience Mia Was Excited to Have
During the Baldcast conversation, Dr. Sanusi Umar asked Mia’s mother to revisit an incident she had mentioned earlier in the interview. Mia’s mother explained that Disneyland was “her thing.” The family booked tickets and, once there, approached Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique to ask whether Mia could participate in the princess makeover experience.
Her mother described the experience Mia wanted: having her hair done, dressing up, and sharing in the same Disney-themed moment as other children. She asked whether the boutique could take her daughter because, as she put it, “She will love that experience.”
Turned Away Because She Did Not Have Enough Hair
According to Mia’s mother, the answer was no. She recalled being told that the boutique could not provide the experience because Mia did not have enough hair. For a child living with alopecia totalis, the rejection meant missing an experience she wanted to share with other children around her.
“That was kind of sad and upset for her,” her mother said. Mia wanted the same experience as the other children walking around in Disney dresses with their hair done, but she did not get to have it.
The Human Side of Childhood Hair Loss
