Video: John’s Acne Keloidalis Nuchae Story: A Referral That Opened a Door

For John, seeking help for acne keloidalis nuchae led to an unexpected connection between two physicians. In this chapter of The Baldcast, he explains how a visit to Dr. Sandra Lee’s practice resulted in a referral to Dr. Sanusi Umar, and why that connection mattered to him and his family.

A Visit That Led to a Referral

John recalls going to Dr. Lee’s practice, although he did not meet with her directly. Instead, he saw another doctor, who took photographs and sent them to Dr. Lee for review. According to John, her response was that his condition was too far advanced for her to address, but she knew someone who might be able to help.

“I know somebody who could definitely help you,” John remembers being told. That person was Dr. Sanusi Umar. John says he was referred to Dr. U’s practice and came in for an appointment.

Dr. Umar on Working With Dr. Sandra Lee

Dr. Umar describes Dr. Lee as a friend and colleague. He says she has appeared in two or three episodes involving cases they cared for, and that they maintain a professional connection focused on their patients’ interests.

He explains that a referral can follow when one physician believes another may be able to take on a case. In John’s situation, Dr. Lee’s recommendation brought him to Dr. Umar. The chapter does not describe the results of any subsequent treatment.

Why Seeing Other People’s Stories Matters

Dr. Umar also credits Dr. Lee’s television program for bringing difficult cases to a broad audience. He notes that John’s family followed the show and that this exposure helped lead them toward another consultation.

John agrees that seeing people with similar experiences can make a difference. He says it helps others recognize, “Oh, it’s not only me.” For someone looking for help with bumps on the back of the head or bumps that won’t heal, the chapter’s central point is not a promised result. It is the importance of finding a path to a medical evaluation and hearing that other people have faced comparable concerns.

The conversation closes on that sense of connection: a family’s interest in a program, a referral between colleagues, and an appointment that followed. John’s broader story continues beyond this chapter.
