For Juan, acne keloidalis nuchae became more than something he could feel on the back of his head. What he first thought was a small pimple in his early twenties grew into a condition that, in his words, created “limitations” in the everyday moments he values as a husband and father.
What Started as a Small Bump
Juan introduces himself simply: a trucker, a father, a husband, and a provider. He remembers the beginning in his early twenties, when he could not see much at the back of his head and could mainly feel what seemed like a small pimple. “It just grew from there,” he says.
That memory gives context to the bumps on the back of the head that became part of a much larger personal story. In this chapter, Juan focuses less on appearance and more on how the condition changed the way he responds to physical closeness with the people he loves.

When Playtime Comes With Limits
Juan says his son likes to wrestle, and he likes wrestling with him. But when his son reaches for his hair or gets anywhere near the back of his head, Juan says he pulls away and creates distance. His wife describes a similar barrier, explaining that even a hug can become difficult because Juan worries that she may touch the area.
These are ordinary family interactions, which is exactly why they matter so much to him. The condition has introduced a boundary into moments that would otherwise be spontaneous.
The Moments Juan Does Not Want to Miss
Juan’s concern is also about time. There are things he can still do with his son now, including picking him up and playing with him. He knows his son will get older, and he does not want those opportunities to pass before he can fully take part in them.
“They need to happen now before he gets older,” Juan says, “and then I miss out on those moments.”

This opening chapter centers Juan’s experience and the limitations he describes. His story continues in the next chapter of The Bumpinator.
