Video: Mia’s Alopecia Story: A Chocolate Smoothie and the First Signs of Hair

For Mia and her family, managing alopecia included a very practical challenge: Mia would not take the capsules on their own. Her mother had to find a way to make the routine workable, and chocolate became part of the answer.

Finding a Routine Mia Would Accept

Mia’s mother explained that they first tried giving her the capsules directly, but Mia would not take them. Because Mia loves chocolate, the family came up with a smoothie approach. Her mother opened two capsules and mixed the contents into a chocolate smoothie, describing it as the only way Mia would take them.

“So we came up with the smoothie,” Mia’s mother told Dr. Sanusi Umar during their Baldcast conversation.

Dr. Umar clarified the routine with her: two capsules were being opened and mixed into the chocolate smoothie, and a serum was also part of what they were doing. The conversation shows how the family adapted the routine around what Mia would actually accept, rather than simply abandoning it when the capsules proved difficult.

Noticing Fine “Peach Fuzz” in the Sun

After following the routine for some time, Mia’s mother began noticing a subtle change. When Mia was outside in the sunlight, she could see very fine hair that she described as “peach fuzz.”

“Whenever she was out in the sun, we could see like a peach fuzz,” she said.

Dr. Umar then asked how soon after starting the routine she noticed that change. Mia’s mother estimated that it was probably around three months. Her observation was specific to Mia’s individual experience and to what she could see in the light.

What This Chapter Shows

This chapter focuses on the family’s practical approach and the first subtle change Mia’s mother reported seeing. It does not establish that the same routine will work for someone else, and it does not answer the broader question of how to regrow hair or identify the best hair loss treatment for another patient. Hair and scalp conditions can have different causes, so treatment decisions should be individualized and physician-led.

For parents who begin noticing small changes in a child’s hair, this chapter also raises a useful question: what details are worth documenting over time? The next part of Mia’s story continues the conversation.
