Video: Marcus Describes Daily Pain From Acne Keloidalis Nuchae

In Chapter 6 of The Bumpinator, Marcus gives Dr. Sanusi Umar a direct account of what his scalp keloid feels like day to day. Beyond what can be seen, he describes pain at the highest point on the scale, frequent itching, and a past period of bloody discharge.

A Keloid That Has Grown Over Three Years

As Dr. Sanusi Umar examines Marcus, the conversation turns to the size of the keloid and the symptoms underneath it. Marcus says it has grown significantly over the past three years. The chapter then moves from appearance to the physical experience he is living with every day.

“A 10” on the Pain Scale

When Dr. Umar asks Marcus to rate the pain on a scale of 1 to 10, Marcus answers simply: “A 10.” He adds, “Yeah, it hurts every day.”

The pain does not require a particular activity to begin. Marcus explains that he can be sitting down when it starts hurting. His description makes the symptom burden central to this chapter rather than treating the keloid only as something visible on the scalp.

Marcus says the area can hurt every day, even while he is simply sitting down.

Itching and Past Bloody Discharge

Marcus also reports that the area “itches a lot.” When Dr. Umar asks whether he gets bloody discharge, Marcus says that he has in the past and recalls one period when it continued for about a month.

For Dr. Umar, the examination and conversation bring the patient’s reported symptoms into focus alongside the visible growth. Marcus’s account makes clear that his concern is not limited to bumps on the back of the head. Pain, itching, and discharge are all part of what he describes experiencing.

Following Marcus Into the Next Chapter

Chapter 6 centers on listening closely to Marcus as he describes what the keloid has been like to live with. His 10-out-of-10 pain rating, daily discomfort, frequent itching, and history of bloody discharge establish the concerns Dr. Umar is evaluating as Marcus’s story continues.
