Some men will experience the progression of male pattern baldness as global thinning. This patient from Beverly Hills, Los Angeles was losing hair in the form of a thinning top and a bald crown. He was also destined to reach a Norwood 7, severely bald stage. Because he needed 10,000 grafts to achieve his objectives, he chose a Dr.UGraft™ beard hair to head transplant performed by Dr. Umar. The patient was able to achieve amazing coverage and the aggressive, youthful hairline that he wanted in his thinning hair transplant results.

Procedure Photos of 10,000 Grafts Hair Transplant with Beard Hair
Dr. Umar expected this patient to reach a state of severe baldness. Therefore, the donor hair remaining on the scalp was not enough to achieve the type of coverage that he most wanted.
However, with a Dr.UGraft™ Follicular Unit Extraction hair transplant, it is possible to expand the donor supply to 10,000 grafts by harvesting body hair.
Dr. Umar removed hair follicles on the patient’s face and neck to reach this quantity. With 10,000 grafts, the patient would be able to achieve global restoration and the luxury of having a low, aggressive hairline. On the other hand, with conventional approaches that only use head hair, patients will have to settle for conservative hairlines.
The Dr.UGraft™ rotary punch has specialized engineering that allows the device to safely remove non-head hair. These hairs tend to grow at much sharper angles. When surgeons use regular, cylindrical Follicular Unit Extraction punches, they can only direct these devices along the same straight trajectory. However, below the skin, the hair angle will change. So using a basic FUE punch will cut through the entire graft.

The Dr.UGraft™ rotary punch has a patented graft grip, pull and score feature. It grabs the tissue around the outside of the hair follicle. Therefore it is not important to follow the changing angles of the hair with the punch in order to reach the actual graft. Once the gripping is in place, the device will then score around the follicular unit as it is being pulled up into the punch lumen. This feature allows surgeons to reliably harvest large numbers of body hair follicles to achieve better thinning hair transplant results and overall coverage for patients.

Dr. Umar removed a combination of head and beard hair. Each graft was carefully placed according to specific directions, angles, and orientations in order to recreate natural patterns of growth. Blending hair and beard hair ensures a more seamless integration with the surrounding areas.

FAQ – Dr.UGraft™ Thinning Hair Transplant Results
When will I be able to see the results of a thinning hair transplant using body hair?
The timeframe for seeing results will generally be the same, whether head or body hair is used. New growth starts to become apparent at three to four months. Many patients can start grooming their hair at ten months. And the final stages of growth and maturity starts to manifest at about 12-18 month following the procedure.
What causes hair to thin as opposed to shedding completely?
In most cases, a person’s genetics will dictate whether they experience thinning or the complete loss of hair. Thinning tends to result as the follicle miniaturizes at a much slower rate while retaining some ability to produce new hair strands.
Are there cases where other types of body hair can be harvested instead of beard hair for a thinning hair transplant
Certainly, other types of body hair can be harvested. Dr. Umar considers the quantity and quality of hair and how well these factors will contribute to coverage and the naturalness of the final results.
