As the Keloid Grew, Marcus Became More Withdrawn
Marcus’s family saw a change as the growth continued. At home, he sometimes separated himself from everyone else, staying in one room while the rest of the family gathered elsewhere. The question became simple and telling: “Where’s Mark?”
That withdrawal gives important context to the decision that came next. Marcus was not simply comparing doctors. He was trying to find someone he trusted with a condition that had become difficult for him to navigate.
Two Consultations Did Not Give Him Confidence
Before finding Dr. U, Marcus had spoken with two plastic surgeons. He says he did not feel confident moving forward with them because he did not believe they fully understood his situation or could relate to the issue he was having.
His standard for the next physician was specific. “I Googled, you know, a doctor that specializes in keloids,” Marcus recalls. Sanusi Umar, MD, Dr. U, was the first doctor who appeared in his search.
Dr. U Explains the Keloid’s Development
Dr. U adds clinical context to Marcus’s story. Marcus had been going bald and decided to undergo a hair transplant. According to Dr. U, the keloid developed rather quickly afterward. He describes the growth as clearly recognizable as a keloid, with a large, serpiginous, or snake-like, configuration across the scalp.
A Search for Understanding
